2010 in review

This post was sent to me by WordPress and I was SO fascinated that I thought I would share it with everyone.

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

I always wondered how things looked from the other side.

Healthy blog!

I can see that I have a LOT of work to do to make my blog better and more interesting this year. So…..guess I’d better get busy writing real quick!!!

Wishing ALL of you a blessed and wonderful New Year. I hope your lives are filled with love and laughter and that you have lots of time for quilting and stitching and knitting and reading and whatever else strikes your fancy.

And the Winner IS…………

YES….this is now my 101st post. The winner of my secret prize in honor of my “100th post” is………

Congratulations Jackie!!! Please stop in to see her lovely work at ….. Jackie’s Stitches.

And the prize is………….

It is a combination Pincushion/Scissor Holder/Scissor Fob, approximately 3″ x 3″…..and yes, the beautiful scissors are part of the prize. It is done on 32 count French Lace linen, with DMC threads and Mill Hill Beads. The pattern is from the Christmas Ornament issue of Just Cross Stitch Magazine.

The wool back of the pincushion has a small pocket to hold the scissors. The cording was made by yours truly with DMC metallics and floss and holds the lovely tiny pair of scissors. This particular pair is one of my favorite’s and is only 2.5″. They can be found at Anita’s Little Stitches. Her scissors have become one of my growing addictions. I have quite a collection. So I hope that this adds to your collection, Jackie!

Thank you to all who read my blog and continue to return faithfully even though my posts are far and few between at times.

During the holiday this week, we at our house have MUCH to be thankful for. May ALL of you have a Happy and truly Blessed Thanksgiving.

Photos of “in progress projects”

Autumn is here and the weather is lovely in Chicago. I did thoroughly enjoy our summer, but it was quite hot. I am happy for the cool weather and happy to be home again. We put over ten thousand miles on our car and I guess I am tired now. I’ve been playing catch-up for all things that were left undone and projects to be attended to.

First I created some 20 baby blankets for my quilt group. They sell them to earn money to pay for speakers during the year. These blankets are quite large….about 40 inches by 40 inches…made with a double layer of flannel…and each has a stuffed animal to match. You should be able to click on the photos to see closeups.

Then I have been working on another quilt project….three embroiderered panels for a winter quilt called “Over the River and Through the Woods” … two panels are completed (hand-stitched with two ply dark brown floss) on a panel about 40 inches wide…

One panel is still unfinished …

Then, of course, I had to spend some time collecting just the right fabrics for the pieced quilt that will hold these three embroidered panels…

I did a tiny bit of needlework, making some tops for future pin cushions. These get filled with sand, embroidered with the recipient’s name and trimmed with some ruched silk ribbon and beads. They are rather small (approximately 2.5 inches by 6 inches). I made four of these so far (two have already been given away). These two are still in progress …

I have also been preparing some things to do a demonstration of big stitch quilting for my quilt group. It is nothing special, but did require preparing some pieces. I am also going to demonstrate on a japanese bento box quilt which I am hand quilting with a “big stitch” sashiko stitch. The quilt is completed, but it is only about 1/2 quilted in the sashing…the border is complete.

So, you see, even when I think I have not been doing anything, and have been silent and away from my computer, I guess I have a LOT of IN PROGRESS pieces to show.

There is surely a lot more to tell, but “pictures are worth a thousand words”…so I took my crummy photos and posted them with as few words as possible.

Until next time…..hopefully not so long!!!!! Amities, Averyclaire

It’s a New Year?

What happened to the old one?   It seems as though I just told everyone I was going to Colorado to see my son through serious back surgery and that was already a year ago.  Then there was the time consuming ill health of myself and my husband…we are doing fine now….but where oh where did our days go?   We only took our RV out once during the entire year!   I still have not taken down my Christmas tree and decorations!   And then…what did I do with my needlearts this year?  There is no list of “finishes.”

I have spent the last few days blog surfing and I am SO IMPRESSED by all those people who have accomplished so much in the year 2009.   I can only pray that I might do half of the things that some of these people have done.   It is inspiring and overwhelming to say the least.   I haven’t even tried to compile a list of what I accomplished…I can only think of what I have not done.   Sounds like I need some positive thinking here.   I’d love to recreate my blog…but it all takes time?   I hope my friends don’t give up on my lack of accomplishments or lack of posting.

I DO have a positive attitude for this year.   We will be healthy…I will be creative and I will have a list of accomplishments for 2010.   How’s that?

One Year!

littlegirlhkjhkjhHappy Anniversary to me!   Yesterday was one year since I began my blog.  I cannot believe the time has gone by so quickly.  I was reviewing my posts and have discovered, however, that I am not as faithful a blogger as I would like to be.  In one year I made only 63 posts….sad considering I had 365 opportunities.  But then I am a person of few words and life has sure had its ups and downs for me this year.  Thank you to all of you that I have met through my blog.  I very much appreciate your kind words and friendship to me.  This is probably the best part of blogging.  And one can learn so much from surfing the blogging world.  I have seen so many different types of blogs, so many different interests, so many super people.  I am glad to be a part of this new and sometimes crazy world.

I intended this blog to be about needlearts and I still hope to have it as such.   However, life didn’t allow me to accomplish much sewing, quilting, needlework, knitting, or anything this year.   I pray that this coming year will be different.   I have finally completed one of my pay-it-forward awards and am just a smidge away from completing the second one.   I will photograph them and post them when my awardees have received them.

My DH will be having his second surgery this week.  There has been a LOT of waiting.  Waiting for test results, waiting for doctor appointments, waiting for surgery, etc.  And this week we begin to wait again.  I should be learning great patience.  I am not so sure that I am.  What I did learn was to not dwell on the negative….only on the positive in life. And we enjoy each day for what it is.

Happy Blogging to all of you out there and thank you for helping me to feel such a special part of this group.     Averyclaire

Home Again

goodmorningscannedimage-31My stay at my daughter’s is finished and I am home. While I came home completely exhausted, it was a lovely stay. But I confess to missing the children terribly! I was actually depressed for a day or so. I guess I was so busy that coming home to my own laundry, cleaning, etc., seemed boring next to my chores with the children. They actually surprised me and brought dinner over last evening and visited for a while. The dinner was delicious and it was delightful to have more hugs!! Hopefully life will allow more needlearts again.    Averyclaire

Hi from Colorado

Boulder and the RockiesHello everyone…I’m still in Colorado, but wanted to give an update.  My son is doing exceptionally well, albeit he must be very careful and do nothing but walk, lay down and take it easy for at least another month.   The surgery appears to have been a great success.  He always told me the weather in Colorado here was mild compared to Chicago and I used to tell him he was telling falsehoods.   However, it’s the middle of winter and it is to be in the 50s tomorrow!! with beautiful sunshine.  Eat your hearts out those of you back in Chicago!   I love driving into Boulder, Colorado and being able to see the Rockies and the city below.

On the trip out here we like to stop at some interesting places…and for me, of course, I look for quilt and needlework stores.   Our first side trip was in the Amana Colonies.   There is a WONDERFUL quilt shop there.  Unfortunately I didn’t get any photos of this one, but believe me it is worth the side trip.   Heritage Designs is to be featured in Quilt Sampler Magazine soon.   They are not only a quilt store, but also a needlework shop.   A great place to visit.  I can’s seem to find a website for them…but be sure to drop in when passing through.

Fons & PorterLater that same day we made the side trip to Winterset, Iowa.   Here one can find the home of Fons and Porters Quilt Store.  You know how one can never seem to find good light fabric…well I found quite a collection to my liking.   I collect patches from famous places I have been, mostly state parks, etc., but I found a lovely patch from Winterset with a quilt block in the middle.  The patch is a fundraiser for the Bridges of Madison County there.  Another great place to visit, so be sure to take the time to stop here.

John Wayne

Not far around the corner from the Fons and Porter shop, one can find the birthplace of our own famous John Wayne!   It was late in the day, but the visitor’s center called ahead and the delightful caretaker opened his shop for us.   Now that’s service you don’t find at home!   If you like John Wayne…this is a must.

Stitchers Garden1I told my daughter-in-law to go skiing with her friends in the moutains for a few days, for a break away from the caregiving.  So after spending some time with my son, helping out with the daily things like, walks around the block, laundry, shopping, cleaning, cooking, etc., I managed to sneek out with the use of our trusty GPS, and found this SUPER needlework shop, The Stitcher’s Garden, in Longmont, Colorado on Main Street.    I couldn’t stop myself and spent far too much money.

Stitchers Garden2

Nancy who helped me out was delightful, even serging the edges of the fabric I purchased.   Again…service beyond compare!!   The shop has a little bit of everything…something for everyone.   I even had to go back again this week and make a second purchase.   And since I will be here for a while…no doubt I’ll go back at least one more time.  This is a MUST stop for anyone in the Longmont, Colorado vicinity…about 20 minutes north of Boulder.  But if you can’t make it here, the online shop is great and so is Nancy.

Cottonwood Quilts1

Today I found a quilt shop nearby in Niwot, called Cottonwood Quilts.   What a great place!   It’s just a short drive north from Boulder.  First of all, the town is a delight in itself.   A quaint little town with old fashioned buildings and lovely people.   Jill at Cottonwood Quilts is a lovely lady and  charming person who not only helped me out with my purchase, but went  so far as to give me handwritten directions to another special quilt shop to visit on the way home!  You know how each quilt store has its own “ambiance”…well, I loved this one.   It’s warm and inviting and the people in the shop were just as delightful.   I know I will have to stop in again before I leave Colorado.   And I know I will shop here again on my next visit to Colorado.  Feel free to drop in to see them online.CottonwoodQuilts2

Now I have to take those directions that Jill from Cottonwood Quilts gave me for The Quilted Moose in Gretna, Nebraska, and program them into our GPS, so I don’t have any trouble at all finding this quilt shop on the way home.

Gee…taking care of my son here in Colorado is turning out to be much more fun than anticipated!   And I feel like I’ve made new friends in the quilt and needlework shops of Colorado!
