Time for Reflection

My Gazing BallMy husband is having a second surgery for his bladder cancer in a few weeks. Things are not the best they can be…but they are definitely not the worst either. Life somehow seems to have been put on hold and this cancer thing has consumed our lives. We are trying desparately to assimilate all the facts and options without becoming crazy with worry. It is difficult to say the least. I am still filled with hope for a good outcome in the end, but it is a long road we are facing. I ask all of you for as many prayers as possible.

Thank you to all of you who send comments and emails as they are much appreciated. This blogging world is absolutely amazing…what a comfort to find so many friends around the world.

In the meantime I find comfort in a crazed cleaning out of my sewing/art room. A purging, if you will, of all things unnecessary. Obviously a mental state that matches the excision of anything extraneous in my life as well. I am quite sure this is a perfect remedy for a soothing of the soul. Curling up with a good, light reading, book is also therapeutic. We continue our long four mile walks, we are eating as healthy as we can…also good for the mental and physical health. I am learning more patience…a blessing I am sure. And gratitude for small things has become overwhelming.

So once again…thank you to all my special friends out there. Gratefully yours, Averyclaire

Still Grateful

Yikes, three weeks have passed since my last post. Where did the time go? I have been busy planning healthy meals with no fat, no sugar, no red meat….etc. I have been walking daily after work….am up to four miles now and have been feeling pretty good. My dear husband has been wonderful in supporting me through this. But I must share with you another shock we have had in our life. Two weeks after my diagnosis, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. While we lived in a fog for a few days, we are very hopeful. He will have surgery in a couple of weeks and hopefully the news will be very affirming. I have learned to look at life very differently. While I still work, I no longer stress about my job. After work, my DH and I spend a lot of time togther talking, shopping for healthy fruits and veggies, and walking. We thoroughly enjoy every moment we share. Unfortunately the needlework and quilting have been set aside for other priorities. So if I don’t post too often, please know all is well. I continue to read all of your posts. I continue to let the Lord hold us up and bask in the warmth of His presence no matter what trials we face. We are grateful.

Last weekend William and I spent the day at the Chicago Botannical Gardens, so I share with you some of the lovely sights from this marvelous place. Enjoy.

Gratitude

Violets For the last several weeks I have not been feeling well and undergoing so many tests that I didn’t think there were any more tests possible! They found a mass on my liver and things truly didn’t look good for a couple of weeks. One minute I was sure things would turn out great and the next minute I’d have tears welling up in my eyes. What a roller coaster ride. Today I received word that the mass was not malignant, but still must be monitored carefully. I’ll need a CT scan every three months and blood work each month to check on things. But today I feel like a new person with a new lease on life.

How things can change in one’s life in just an instant! We went from laughing about the problems of redoing our bathroom (when you have only one bathroom to use) to seriously discussing chemotherapy, surgery, and yes we even discussed death quite a bit. We had prepared ourselves for the worst scenario. I guess I am not out of the woods for another year, but I sure feel like a bit of sunshine today. Life can change in the blink of an eye!

I am grateful for my very special husband who walked with me and held my hand each step of this journey, for my daughter who cried with me, and for my two sons who knew nothing of my illness, but are always there for me, no matter what, and for my sister-in-law (the oncology nurse) who kept me focused and kept me from freaking out. She is so knowledgeable about so many things…but her caring concern was very special to me. I am grateful for my friend who lives around the corner and worried for me to take some of my burden away, and for my co-workers who prayed for me each day. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I am grateful for my friend who had dinner with me last evening. She is such good company that I didn’t need to dwell on “THE” doctor’s appointment I was having today. We laughed and discussed everything, including my concerns. She is delightful company and I thank her for being there. She had no idea about my health issues when we met, but patiently sat and listened VERY well.

I am grateful, but “grateful” doesn’t seem powerful enough of a word to describe how I feel today. A chance to begin again….or to pick up where I left off and make life even better. This surely was a life changing experience for me and I AM grateful. And last, but not least, I am a very spiritual person and am grateful for the arms of the Lord who held me up these past weeks. It was comforting and peace giving. I knew the warmth of His presence would be with me no matter how it turned out. Again, I am grateful…….Averyclaire

Flora and Fauna

This blog is supposed to be about needlearts of all kinds, but I am also an avid gardener. The garden is truly an inspiration for my needlearts. I have spent years collecting, planting, moving, removing, weeding, etc. And I love it. I do stroll in the garden every morning and evening, just to see what is the rain has brought to fruition for today. It has been a delightful diversion for me and very good for the soul. I hope you enjoy my photos. They are not the quality of Thomas at Walk the Wilderness nor Philip at PA Photography, nor so many others of you out there who do so much better with photography than me, but with my little point and shoot digital, it’s OK.

2009 May Flowers

My Weeping Japanese Maple is the pride of my garden…it’s nearly twenty years old.   I love my pink Japanese peony too.  There are Johnson’s Blue perennial geramiums, purple petunias, blue columbine, bright orange poppies, a “teenage” robin (who was just a baby a few days ago), and the ever annoying baby bunny rabbit who loves to feast on my greenery!

And as each week and day goes by, the garden is ever changing.   Today it is blue and orange and pink and red, and later other lovely colors will emerge.   Each bit just as exciting as the one before.

Like life…ever changing.   Forgive my lack of needlearts for today and enjoy my garden with me.    Averyclaire.

They Are Back!

I don’t know what happened. It’s almost as though someone went into my site and removed it. Anyway…they are back and I can visit all of you again. Thank Heavens!

My Favorites Are Gone!

Today I came on-line to visit all of my favorite places and found my list of favorites had disappeared! I certainly did NOT delete everyone. I wrote to WordPress and hope I have an answer soon. What a terrible thing not to be able to visit all my friends! I count on my list for quick visits to all of your sites. Hope they can fix it soon.

At the Feet of Angels

The garden is so lovely at this time of year. I am throughly enjoying a stroll around the garden each morning and evening taking photos as I go. Here are some to share.

I have a Red Trillium. I planted it LONG ago and thought it was lost. Did you know that when you plant a trillium it takes three or four years to grow? In order for them to spread, ants and mice must take the seeds from the Trillium to their nests and “replant” the seeds. Then in three or four more years you will get more. I haven’t seen any mice lately, but I am praying for ants. SMILETrillium Red Trillium

More later…I am off to work now. Amities, Averyclaire

What a day!

Ollie Friday evening I said yes to babysitting two of my grandchildren and the dog. It’s always a delight and an adventure. They were playing out in the yard when I arrived, as they have a big wooden fort built at the back of the acre property. When I didn’t see them anymore, I went out back to be sure they were safe. I found them all playing in the forest behind the property…building a fort of big fallen branches, etc…..every little boys’ dream. However, it had rained for two weeks straight here. My grandson, his friends, and the DOG were covered with MUD!!! Of course, I was wearing a “white” sweatshirt and a “white” jacket. I brought them all up to the house and my grandson said, don’t worry Nana, I know how to clean “Ollie” (the dog). We got the hose out and Noah proceeded to hose down the dog and ME as well….while I wiped all the MUD from Ollie’s paws and underside. By the time we were finished, I was splattered with MUD and my trousers, socks and shoes were soaked clear through!   Oh I should have had my camera!!  Ah, the price of saying yes to babysitting!

framing On another note…this weekend I did make excellent progress toward cleaning up my art room and finishing up some mending projects that were waiting for me. I also cut my very first photo mat, and, with my DH’s help, he taught me to cut some wooden framing pieces. I stained the pieces and it all awaits assembly.

new mat My French sampler will soon look beautiful! So all in all, it was a great weekend! Amities, Averyclaire

French Sampler

Full BicycletteHere is my second finish of the year…not saying much since it is already April. However, it was a fun project. The pattern is from french designer by the name of Isabelle Haccourt Vautier called “A Bicyclette.” I purchased the pattern from a little needlework shop in Colorado called Stitcher’s Garden. They have a section of their shop and webpage called “The French Quarter.” This section has this pattern and many other lovely French patterns. It is a really nice shop with fair prices and wonderful people! The sampler worked up quickly and was fun to do. It was done on 32 ct. Belgian Linen with Threadworx overdyed, slightly variegated thread, Woodlawn Green #1048. I have already prepared it for framing. It’s an odd size so I will probably have to mat and frame it myself…too expensive to have it done. Oh…and I really do love to ride my bicycle!

I’m working now on cleaning up my art room so that I can actually walk into the room and get to my sewing machine. I have a LOVELY art room, but sadly this winter I’ve just piled things into the room and can’t work in it anymore! Hopefully, it will be done before too long.

Fresh from the Garden

Fresh from my garden last weekend are pretty blue crocuses and teeny tiny daffodils. I love them. And I love the warm weather we are due to have this week. It has been a long awful winter and I surely am delighted with Spring.Tiny Daffodils 2009crocus 2009I took the day off last Friday and went to the International Quilt Show with two of my friends. Bought a tool I probably didn’t need and a pattern I think I already had, but the day was fun. On Saturday I went to a church luncheon and was thrilled to see so many people who have moved away, but returned to share the luncheon with us. There were over 100 women there and it was a beautiful day. On Sunday I went to a wedding shower luncheon for the young man who lives across the street from us (he has a lovely bride-to-be). It was especially fun because many neighbors attended and would you believe that it was the first time in 35 years that all of us neighbors had sat down together at the same time for a lovely lunch! Now we plan to make it a regular thing! What fun.

Yes, I put the bad work-a-day feelings behind me and decided to concentrate on living once more. Yes, I still get tired and worn out, but changing my attitude has helped considerably. Hundreds of you out there work full-time and I have no right to complain…especially when so many are out of work completely. Thanks for all of your support!

Come back soon to see my progress on my french sampler…it’s almost completed! Amities, Averyclaire
